At Hope for Refugees International, we believe that everyone deserves to live authentically, safely, and with dignity. That belief was proudly on display as our team, volunteers, and community members participated in this year’s Pride Toronto StreetFair and the annual Pride Parade

Pride is often recognized as a celebration of diversity, inclusion, and love. For many of the Black African and Caribbean LGBTQI+ refugees, asylum seekers, and newcomers we serve, however, Pride represents something even more profound, it is a reminder that they belong.
From the moment the Pride Toronto StreetFair opened, our booth quickly became a welcoming space filled with conversation, music, laughter, and creativity.
Visitors were greeted by vibrant artwork created by one of our own community members, whose pieces were proudly displayed throughout the booth. His artwork sparked meaningful conversations about identity, resilience, and the healing power of creative expression. Sharing his work was more than an artistic showcase, it was an opportunity to celebrate the incredible talents that exist within our refugee community.

Our volunteers brought incredible energy throughout the weekend. Whether dancing with passersby, inviting visitors to learn more about our work, or simply sharing smiles and conversation, they helped create an atmosphere where everyone felt welcome. Strangers became friends, new relationships were formed, and our booth became a space where people felt comfortable stopping, connecting, and celebrating together.
Members of our community enthusiastically shared their personal experiences, spoke about Hope for Refugees International’s programs, and helped visitors better understand the realities facing Black African and Caribbean LGBTQI+ refugees and newcomers. Every interaction helped foster greater awareness while reminding people that behind every refugee story is a person with dreams, talents, and the desire to belong.
The celebration continued during the Pride Parade, where our members, volunteers, staff, and supporters proudly marched together through the streets of Toronto. Waving flags, dancing to music, and celebrating alongside thousands of attendees, our group embodied the resilience, strength, and joy of a community that continues to thrive despite the challenges many have overcome.

For many of our members, this weekend represented much more than attending an event. It was a chance to be fully themselves in a space where they felt accepted, celebrated, and surrounded by people who affirmed their identities. Moments like these help build confidence, strengthen social connections, and remind people that they are not alone.
At Hope for Refugees International, we know that healing happens in many ways. Sometimes it happens through access to services and support. Other times, it happens through shared laughter, dancing with new friends, admiring a piece of art created by a fellow community member, or marching proudly alongside people who believe that everyone deserves to belong.
These are the moments that build stronger communities, and healthier futures.
