Empower & Connect Fridays
About the Initiative
Empower & Connect Fridays, is a comprehensive peer-to-peer support, mentorship, and empowerment initiative specifically designed for Black African and LGBTQ+ refugees, asylum seekers, and newcomers.
This bi-monthly virtual and in-person event aims to provide a safe, inclusive, and engaging space where participants can share their experiences, learn about essential settlement services, and resources, and foster community bonds. Through a variety of interactive and enriching activities, “Empower & Connect Fridays” supports participants in their journey to integrate into Canadian society, promote mental well-being, and celebrate cultural diversity. The program runs every 1st and 3rd Friday of the month from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
Objectives
- Support Integration: Facilitate the understanding of Canadian culture, systems, and services among Black African and LGBTQ+ refugees and newcomers.
- Foster Community: Create a welcoming environment for participants to build connections and support networks.
- Promote Mental Health: Address mental health needs by providing a safe space for expression, sharing, and recreational activities.
- Empower Participants: Equip participants with the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary for successful settlement and personal development.
- Celebrate Diversity: Highlight and honor the cultural heritage and diversity within the community.
Goal
The primary goal of “Empower & Connect Fridays” is to foster peer-to-peer support, learning, storytelling, and experience sharing in a fun and inclusive environment, addressing the mental health needs of refugees and asylum seekers while aiding their integration into Canadian society.

Summary of Actitvies
- Dialogue & Experience Sharing: Open forums for participants to share their challenges, opportunities, and experiences in a supportive environment.
- Karaoke & Dance Sessions: Enjoy singing karaoke songs and dancing to favorite tunes, fostering a sense of community and joy.
- Poetry & Performance: Participants can present poetic pieces, performances, and storytelling sessions, allowing for creative expression.
- Informative Presentations: We invite guest speakers to share information on housing, immigration, employment, health, education, volunteer opportunities, and community engagement.
- Cultural Nights: The initiative celebrates the diverse cultures within the group by having themed nights where participants can share their cultural heritage through food, music, dance, and traditional attire.
- Skill-Building Workshops: We organize workshops focused on developing skills such as digital literacy, resume writing, job interview preparation, language classes, and financial literacy.
- Health & Wellness Activities: We hold yoga, meditation, and mindfulness sessions to help participants manage stress, depression, and anxiety. Provide information on mental health resources and services.
- Cooking & Nutrition Classes: We host cooking classes where participants can learn to prepare healthy meals on a budget. Share nutritional information and tips on maintaining a balanced diet.
- Art & Craft Sessions: We engage participants in creative art and craft activities like painting, drawing, and crafts, offering a therapeutic outlet for self-expression.
- Outdoor Activities & Field Trips: We plan and hold occasional outdoor activities or field trips to local parks, museums, or community events to encourage social interaction and exploration of the local community.
- Mentorship Program: We pair newcomers with mentors who can provide guidance, support, and advice on navigating life in Canada.
- Digital Storytelling: We create digital storytelling opportunities where participants can document and share their journeys and experiences through videos, blogs, or social media, fostering a sense of pride and accomplishment.
- Resource Library: The initiative has a resource library with information on local services, self-help guides, and educational materials accessible during the sessions.
- Community Engagement Projects: We encourage and create opportunities for participants to engage in community service projects, fostering a sense of belonging and giving back to the community.
- Talent Shows & Competitions: We organize talent shows or friendly competitions to showcase the diverse talents within the group, boosting confidence and camaraderie.
- Team-Building Games: We incorporate games designed to foster teamwork, interaction, participation, and conversation, helping to build connections and enhance community spirit.
