SUMMARY:The 2nd Global Conference on Sexual Health\, Reproductive Rights\, and Gender Equity in Refugee and Humanitarian Crises
DESCRIPTION:On this page\n[sidebar_2_content] \n\nDate: May 9 – 10\, 2025 \nVenue: 163 Queen St\, Toronto\, ON M7A 2H6 \n  \nTheme\n “Empowering Voices\, Ensuring Rights: Advancing Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights and Gender Equity Among Refugees and Newcomers” \n  \nIntroduction\nIn refugee and humanitarian context\, accessing essential Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) services is a significant challenge\, particularly for women\, girls\, and LGBTQ+ and other vulnerable populations. These groups often face limited access to quality services such as sexual health services\, family planning\, maternal health care\, and support for gender-based violence\, putting their health and well-being at risk. The 2nd Global Conference on Sexual Health\, Reproductive Rights\, and Gender Equity in Refugee and Humanitarian Crises aims to address these critical issues. \n  \nThe Challenge\nWorldwide\, about 4.3 million sexually active individuals experience poor or limited access to SRH services throughout their lives\, as estimated by the World Health Organization (WHO). Displaced women and girls are disproportionately affected\, often facing threats to their physical\, sexual\, and psychological well-being. These challenges are intensified in refugee and humanitarian settings\, where conditions like gender-based violence\, unsafe abortions\, and inadequate obstetric care are leading causes of female morbidity and mortality. \n\nFemale Genital Mutilation (FGM): Over 200 million women and girls globally have undergone FGM\, facing severe lifelong physical and psychological consequences.\nChild Marriage and Unsafe Abortions: Approximately 33\,000 child marriages occur daily\, and there are 25 million unsafe abortions annually.\nAdolescent Risks: In humanitarian settings\, adolescent girls face increased risks of early marriage and pregnancy\, which can lead to health complications and limited future opportunities. Pregnancy and childbirth-related complications are a major cause of death among girls aged 15-19 in these settings.\n\n  \nThe Need for Action\nAchieving sustainable sexual and reproductive health requires upholding the sexual rights of all individuals\, particularly those in refugee and humanitarian settings. This includes the rights of women\, girls\, and other vulnerable populations to make informed decisions about their sexuality without facing coercion\, discrimination\, or violence. Canada\, and Ontario specifically\, have seen a rise in refugees and asylum seekers\, including African refugees and LGBTQI individuals\, who face numerous barriers in accessing SRH services. These barriers\, which include legal\, cultural\, and systemic issues\, must be addressed to ensure the health and well-being of these communities. \n  \nTheme\nOrganized under the theme: “Advancing Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights and Gender Equity Among Refugees and Newcomers” the conference will emphasize the importance of empowering marginalized voices\, particularly those refugees\, newcomers\, and other vulnerable populations while ensuring their sexual and reproductive health rights are upheld. The conference theme reflects the need for action in advancing SRHR and provides a strong foundation for discussions and strategies to improve health outcomes in refugee and humanitarian settings.\n\n \nConference Goals \nThis conference seeks to bring together refugees and newcomers\, advocates\, policymakers\, community organizations\, government representatives\, humanitarian organizations\, and stakeholders to: \n  \n\nEnhance Access to Quality SRHR Services: Develop and share strategies to improve access to critical SRHR services such as family planning\, maternal health\, HIV prevention\, and gender-based violence support\, ensuring that all individuals\, regardless of their circumstances\, receive the care they need.\nReduce Gender-Based Violence: Implement and advocate for measures to protect refugees and displaced women and girls from violence\, exploitation\, and abuse\, creating safer environments for these vulnerable populations.\nEmpower Women and Girls: Promote gender equity by providing education\, resources\, and support to empower women and girls\, enabling them to have control over their sexual and reproductive health and to participate fully in their communities.\nPromote Gender Equality: Advocate for the rights of all individuals\, including LGBTQ+ persons\, to have autonomy over their sexual and reproductive health\, free from coercion\, discrimination\, and violence.\nCreate Inclusive Environments: Foster inclusive and safe spaces where refugees and other community members can access services\, share their experiences\, and advocate for their rights\, ensuring that their voices are heard and respected.\nKnowledge Exchange and Best Practices: Facilitate the sharing of innovative strategies\, research findings\, and best practices among experts and practitioners to enhance the effectiveness of SRH and gender equity initiatives.\nPolicy Advocacy: Develop actionable policy recommendations that strengthen SRH services and promote gender equity\, encouraging collaboration among policymakers\, NGOs\, and community leaders.\nStrategic Partnerships: Build and enhance partnerships among governments\, humanitarian organizations\, the private sector\, and donors to secure funding and support for SRH and gender equity initiatives.\n\n  \nJoin Us\nBy addressing these urgent needs\, we can work towards a future where sexual health\, reproductive rights\, and gender equity are guaranteed for all\, regardless of their circumstances. Join us at this crucial event to contribute to meaningful change and support the health and dignity of refugees and displaced persons worldwide. \nFor more information and to register for the conference\, please visit this Link. \n  \nTogether\, we can create a world where every individual has the opportunity to thrive.\n

This impactful event aims to unite refugees\, including LGBTQ+ refugees\, newcomers\, asylum seekers\, advocates\, activists\, and allies to take a collective stand against gender-based violence (GBV)\, which remains one of the most pervasive human rights violations globally. \nThe 16 Days of Activism\, commencing on November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) and concluding on December 10 (International Human Rights Day)\, is a crucial global campaign and initiative dedicated to raising awareness\, advocating for prevention strategies\, and fostering action to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls. The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence emphasizes the essential link between gender-based violence and fundamental human rights\, urging us all to reflect on our roles in eradicating this issue. \nThe “Voices for Change” event will delve deeply into the specific forms of gender-based violence experienced by refugees\, newcomers\, and LGBTQ+ communities\, shining a light on the unique challenges faced by survivors. We will celebrate the resilience and courage of these individuals while calling upon everyone—from grassroots advocates\, allies\, media to policymakers—to be proactive in creating a safer\, more dignified environment for all. \nThe event will focus on addressing GBV within refugee and newcomer communities\, putting a special emphasis on engaging young men and boys\, as well as male allies\, in discussions around positive masculinity and gender equality as vital components in the fight to prevent GBV. \n  \nWhy This Event Matters\nViolence against women and girls is a global epidemic that transcends borders\, cultures\, and socio-economic backgrounds. Among refugees\, newcomers\, and asylum seekers\, the threat of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) is particularly severe due to vulnerability arising from displacement\, economic hardship\, social isolation\, and precarious immigration status. \nIn Canada\, refugees and newcomers often face unique challenges\, including limited access to services\, language barriers\, and a lack of knowledge about their legal rights. These challenges are further compounded by housing insecurity\, unemployment\, mental health struggles\, and cultural stigma. \nThis event serves as a platform to raise awareness of these pressing issues\, provide crucial support to survivors\, and encourage collaborative efforts among stakeholders to combat violence in all its forms. By participating\, attendees will contribute to a larger movement aimed at fostering understanding\, solidarity\, and concrete actions to address gender-based violence. \nAdditionally\, the inclusion of men and boys as active participants in the conversation around positive masculinity is crucial.
